Visit by the New Zealand Correction Women’s Association to Tanumalala Prison

Yesterday, Monday 2nd September 2024, the Samoa Police, Prisons & Corrections Services (SPPCS) welcomed the New Zealand Correction Women’s Association to Tanumalala Prison. The visit was marked by a formal and heartfelt reception attended by SPPCS Acting Commissioner Leiataua Samuelu Afamasaga, Deputy Commissioner Papali’i Monalisa Tia’i-Keti, members of the Executive, Senior Management, officers, and Tanumalala Prison staff.

The occasion commenced with an opening prayer by Prison Corrections Officer (PCO) Mautofiga Tuuu, which set the spiritual tone for the event. In his address, PCO Tuuu emphasized the importance of serving others in the demanding yet essential role of corrections officers, highlighting the values of humility and dedication to duty.

Acting Commissioner Leiataua Samuelu Afamasaga extended a warm welcome to the delegation from the New Zealand Correction Women’s Association. He delivered words of encouragement, underscoring the shared commitment to professional development, cooperation, and the mutual support between the two nations’ corrections services. The exchange of knowledge and resources remains a key factor in improving corrections operations and staff welfare.

A traditional Samoan ava ceremony was conducted to formally honor and receive the distinguished visitors. As a gesture of goodwill and support, the New Zealand Correction Women’s Association presented valuable gifts to Tanumalala’s officers, including work boots, pants, and other essential items, which will contribute to enhancing the working conditions of the corrections staff.

Following the ceremonial proceedings, the visiting delegation was given a comprehensive tour of the Tanumalala Prison facilities, offering insights into the operations and management of the facility. The tour showcased various sectors of the prison, including security, rehabilitation, and inmate welfare programs.

The visit concluded with a shared luncheon, where guests and officers enjoyed traditional Samoan cuisine, accompanied by entertainment that reflected the strong cultural ties between the visiting delegation and the local corrections community.

This visit further strengthens the relationship between Samoa and New Zealand in the field of corrections, fostering a spirit of collaboration and support aimed at enhancing the corrections services of both nations.
