Strategic Partnership and Preparations Discussed During High-Level Visit by Australian Officials to Samoa Police, Prisons, and Corrections Services

On Tuesday, 13 August 2024, the Samoa Police, Prisons, and Corrections Services (SPPCS) hosted a significant high-level meeting with key representatives from Australia to discuss ongoing collaboration and preparations for the advancement of law enforcement capabilities in Samoa.

The meeting was attended by the Honorable Minister of Police, Prisons, and Corrections Services, Faualo Harry Schuster, Commissioner Auapa’au Logoitino Filipo, along with Deputy Commissioners Papalii Monalisa Tia’i-Keti and Lafaitele Herbert Aati. Also present was Senior Responsible Officer, Detective Superintendent Daniel Evans of the Australian Federal Police. The Australian delegation was led by His Excellency Will Robinson, Australian High Commissioner to Samoa, and First Assistant Secretary Mark Tattersall from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), Polynesia Micronesia, and Development Division.

The primary focus of the discussions centered on the preparation and strengthening of the SPPCS, particularly in the areas of forensic investigation, digital forensics, and overall operational efficiency. His Excellency Will Robinson and First Assistant Secretary Mark Tattersall were briefed on the latest developments and initiatives being implemented within SPPCS to enhance its capabilities in tackling crime, ensuring public safety, and upholding the rule of law in Samoa.

Following the discussions, the Australian officials were given an extensive tour of the SPPCS Forensic Unit, the state-of-the-art Digital Forensics Laboratory, and the Samoa Police Operations Centre. These facilities play a critical role in the SPPCS’s efforts to combat crime through advanced forensic analysis, cybercrime investigation, and coordinated law enforcement operations.

Commissioner Auapa’au Logoitino Filipo emphasized the importance of the strategic partnership between Samoa and Australia, noting that continued collaboration and support are essential for the development of the SPPCS’s operational capacities. He also expressed his gratitude for the ongoing assistance provided by the Australian Federal Police and DFAT, which has been instrumental in advancing the capabilities of the SPPCS.

His Excellency Will Robinson and First Assistant Secretary Mark Tattersall reaffirmed Australia’s commitment to supporting Samoa in its efforts to strengthen law enforcement and security. They acknowledged the progress made by SPPCS and pledged to continue working closely with Samoan authorities to address emerging challenges in law enforcement and public safety.

The visit concluded with a renewed commitment from both nations to uphold the shared values of peace, security, and the rule of law in the Pacific region.
